Artist Statement

I stitch, I write, I glue. I rip, I paint, I mend. I stitch, I rip, I patch.

I approach my work with vigor and openness, never knowing how a piece will turn out. My process is organic, intuitive and physical, always a work of the hands. Stitches, marks and fragments of cloth and paper are recurring components in my art, and I frequently find myself writing the words to a poem by my father. The words are impossible to read because they are deeply personal to me, not meant for consumption. Yet their presence is a tie to another time, another place.

Repetition in my work – whether by stitch or word – connects me to the past. I am drawn to gray, rust and brown, things old, frayed, decayed – all relics of the stones and fields of the land where I grew up. The combination of the organic and the indecipherable makes the work both familiar yet unknowable.

Artist Bio

Toward the end of my professional career as a writer/communicator, I began to explore the world of art. For years I took classes that interested me, and I found myself gravitating to fiber arts: books, at first, then mixed media. I eventually found my way to stitching (sadly, a high school accident in Home Ec scared me away from sewing for decades), and I take great delight in the imperfection of my stitches because – it’s who I am. Here are the shows in which I will have or have had work:
